Antigua & Barbuda is a captivating twin-island nation in the eastern Caribbean Sea, part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago. With a combined area of 440 square kilometres, the islands boast stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush landscapes. The nation enjoys a tropical maritime climate characterised by warm temperatures throughout the year, with a relatively cooler and drier season from December to April.
The capital city of Antigua & Barbuda is St. John's, located on the island of Antigua, the larger and more populous of the two islands. Antigua is known for its historical sites, including Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Fort James, a well-preserved 18th-century fortress. Barbuda, the smaller and more secluded island, is renowned for its unspoiled environment and abundant wildlife, including the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to one of the largest nesting colonies of frigatebirds in the world.
The official language of Antigua & Barbuda is English, reflecting its history as a former British colony. The nation gained independence in 1981 and is now a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. The population, estimated at around 100,000, is a diverse mix of African, British, and West Indian descent.
The economy of Antigua & Barbuda primarily relies on tourism, which accounts for a significant portion of the country's GDP, alongside offshore banking, agriculture, and fishing. The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) is the official currency, pegged to the US Dollar.
Antigua & Barbuda is a member of the United Nations, CARICOM, the OECS, and the British Commonwealth. With a strong focus on sustainable development, the nation is making strides towards renewable energy, environmental conservation, and climate change adaptation.
